The city of Amathus (Amathous) is one of the most ancient cities found by archaeologists in Cyprus. The first mention of the city date back to 1100 BC (early iron age). This city was an independent state, built on the coastal cliff with a natural harbour.
Amathus was very popular among merchants and prospered. By the year 800 BC, the town was built the Palace and the port. On a cliff near the city was built the temple of the goddess Aphrodite who was the patroness of Amathus. Since that time, the city was not only a trade center but also a religious center. In China, paleontologists have discovered the remains, perhaps until now unknown type of people. These people lived in southern China from 11 to 14 thousand years ago.
Paleontologists have discovered the bones of at least five individuals. The remains of the first three were found in 1989 in the red Deer cave in Yunnan province. Since then, scientists call them the cave people red Deer. Another skeleton was later found outside the village of Lanling in the Guangxi Autonomous region.
In an article published in the journal PLoS One, paleontologists, however, are saying that it is not yet possible to state with certainty whether these remains are still unknown of man or not.
One of the leaders of a group of scientists Darren Kanro from the University of New South Wales in Australia said that the problem of classification is, in part, that “in terms of human evolution or paleoanthropology, there is no universally accepted biological definition of our own species (Homo sapiens)”.
Skull and teeth discovered skeletons very similar to each other that allows us to conclude that we are talking about one and the same population. Continue reading
